Chapter 9

“I know Joe’s place doesn’t look like much, but they have the best burgers in five counties right here,” Sandy said proudly as he looked around the place. He clearly couldn’t have been any prouder of it if his name had been on the deed.

Alex looked around the diner, and he had to smile. It reminded him a little of Buck’s Grill, the diner in Elkton Falls where he and Elise loved to eat, not necessarily by its décor but by its atmosphere. He doubted a tourist would be impressed with the faded linoleum floors or the cracked vinyl booths, but to Alex, it felt like a little piece of heaven. The sweet tea they’d ordered had given credence to Sandy’s claim that the place had good food. Alex had rarely found a diner or grill that didn’t serve food on par with its tea, and if what he was currently drinking was any indication, this meal was going to be a home run.

“How are the fries?” Elise asked as she studied the menu.

“Home cut in back, and if it’s possible, they’re even better than the burgers are,” Sandy said.

An older woman wearing galoshes and a plastic rain hat came up to their table looking agitated about something. “Have you heard the news, Sandy?”

“What’s that, Evvie?” he asked her.

“There’s going to be a flood,” she said, looking frightened by the prospect.

“I heard that announcement, too,” Sandy said, clearly trying to ease the older woman’s fears. “It’s just a flash flood warning. That doesn’t necessarily mean that we’re going to have one.”

“You mark my words,” she said as she pointed a bony finger in his direction. “When my rheumatism starts acting up, it’s about to rain, and I mean by the bucketload.”

“Then you’d better get home where you’re safe and sound. You don’t have anything to worry about once you’re there, not sitting on top of the hill like you are,” Sandy told her.

“Believe you me, that’s exactly where I’m going, and if you had any sense, you’d do the same yourself.”

“Hey, Evvie. Looks like you’re getting ready for some rain,” a waitress in her mid-thirties said with a smile as she looked the older woman over.

“It’s coming. You mark my words,” Evvie said as she stormed off, no doubt heading for home and high ground.

“Are you all ready to order?” the waitress asked them after the woman was gone. She had on a nametag that said, “Call me Colleen,” so Alex was determined to do just that.

“I don’t know. Are we ready, folks?” Sandy asked Alex and Elise. Once they both nodded in the affirmative, the shopkeeper said, “Colleen, I’ll have a double cheeseburger and a side of fries. Don’t forget to make it all the way, darlin’,” he added.

“As if you’d eat a burger any other way,” Colleen said with a practiced grin. “How about you folks? I haven’t seen you around town before.”

Sandy explained, “Colleen here is the town welcome wagon. If you haven’t been welcomed by her, then you haven’t been properly welcomed at all.
